Richard Stallman, kjent støttespiller for fri programvare, skal holde to gratisforedrag i Norge i den kommende uken.
"Copyright developed in the age of the printing press, and was designed to fit with the system of centralized copying imposed by the printing press. But the copyright system does not fit well with computer networks, and only draconian punishments can enforce it.
The global corporations that profit from copyright are lobbying for draconian punishments, and to increase their copyright powers, while suppressing public access to technology. But if we seriously hope to serve the only legitimate purpose of copyright -- to promote progress, for the benefit of the public -- then we must make changes in the other direction."
"Copyright utviklet seg i trykkepressens tidsalder, og var tilpasset den begrensede, sentraliserte kopieringen som trykkepressen medførte. Copyright-systemet passer ikke særlig godt sammen med nettverk av datamaskiner, og det kan bare håndheves med trussel om strenge straffer.
De multinasjonale selskapene som profiterer på copyright driver lobbyvirksomhet for strenge straffer for å øke sin makt, samtidig som de hindrer samfunnets adgang til ny teknologi. Men hvis vi mener alvor med å fremme det eneste legitime formålet med copyright -- å fremme utvikling til beste for samfunnet -- da må vi sørge for endringer i stikk motsatt retning."
