Toppnivådomenene (den siste delen av domenenavnet, for eksempel .no og .com) skal utvides, og i den sammenheng har ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) satt igang en søknadsrunde for å få innspill til hvilke domener som skal opprettes.
For å få være med, må søkeren betale $50 000, og selv da er ikke annet sikkert enn at ICANN vil bedømme søknaden, og se om den skal nomineres. Blant annet har norske Nameplanet søkt på å være domeneregistrator for .name og altså vært villig til å betale over 450.000 kroner for å bli det.
Foreløpig har 47 foretak og grupperinger søkt om de domenene de mener er interessante, og selvsagt de det kan tjenes penger på.

Det som er interessant er at EU ikke hadde, ved søknadsperiodens slutt 2. oktober, levert søknad.
Domenenavnene varierer helt fra uskyldige .kids til kontroversielle .sex og .xxx
